Initially established as a military base during World War II, the airport was originally part of the Dunreath Golf Course area before its transformation into an RAAF base in 1942. This strategic conversion catered to the pressing needs of the war, with the Main Roads Department of Western Australia constructing the first runway in 1943 to accommodate RAAF fighter planes. The following year witnessed further development with the addition of a second runway, marking a significant step in its evolution. In 1944, the Australian government, recognizing the limitations of the existing Maylands Aerodrome, granted permission to Australian National Airways Pty Ltd (ANA) and Qantas to commence operations from this site in Guildford. This pivotal decision opened a new chapter for the airport, setting it on a path to become a vital hub in the country’s commercial aviation network.
The post-war era ushered in a new era of growth and development for the airport. In September 1952, the Guildford Aerodrome officially shed its military past and was renamed Perth Airport, signifying its readiness to embrace its role as a key civilian aviation centre. The construction of the new international terminal in March 1953, with an investment of AU$180,000, was a milestone in its transition to a fully-fledged commercial airport. The terminal, ingeniously built using repurposed wartime materials, symbolised the airport’s resilience and adaptability. By 1962, the airport had further consolidated its operations, with the main domestic airlines moving out of their individual hangars and into the first combined Domestic and International Terminal. This consolidation not only streamlined operations but also paved the way for Perth Airport to become the bustling, world-class airport it is known as today, playing an integral role in connecting Western Australia with the rest of the world.
